3/31/06 Update

Friday, March 31st, 2006

Kaley was discharged this afternoon. Luckily the antibiotic that they started on Tuesday appears to be doing the trick. The doctors also pulled Kaley’s dialysis line! That shows a lot of confidence on their part since they were being especially carefull not to get overconfident with Kaley.

Kaley is doing much better. As I predicted, their were several more options of antibiotics that Kaley’s transplant coordinator was not aware of. Kaley has perked up quite a bit and the plan is for her to be discharged tommorow.

Thanks for your continued support.

3/29/06 Update

Well,

we didn’t make it through the night. It’s 3:10am right now, and I just sent Kaley in on the ambulance into the U of M Medical Center (where the transplant was performed). In the ER they can start her on some meds that will help get her to the second dose of antibiotic that will continue to fight off her UTI.

Apparently her UTI is a very rare resistent strain of something that resist many of the common antibiotics. Kaley’s transplant coordinator, bless her heart considering her primary job is to be the liason with patients, told us last night that if this antibiotic doesn’t work there probably won’t be any that will. I don’t believe her, but this kind of doom and gloom attitude has been a reccurring theme with many of the UMMC staffers. I can’t help but think of Tom Smykowski from the movie “Office Space”:

“Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don’t have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?”

Obviously these coordinators have similiar jobs and skills.

3/28/06 Update

Kaley was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI) on Tuesday March 21st. For those familiar with Kaley, a UTI often causes her stomach to shut down, continual nausea and vomiting, and eventually a trip into the hospital. Generally after her one or two days being on an anti-biotic, she pops out of it and is feeling better again. One week after this diagnosis, she finally got her first does of antibiotic as an out patient on Tuesday March 22nd. It may have been one day too long to wait. Kaley started her cycle of nausea and vomiting this afternoon and has been going through her normal cycle of medicating, sleeping, waking, vomiting, and repeat until symptoms cease. Hopefully she can stay outpatient long enough for me to get her to the outpatient clinic tomorrow so as to let them medicate her with stronger IV meds and get her a second dose of antibiotic.

Sorry about being incomunicato for the last week or so, but I haven’t had much to update. As you can tell from her posts, she is doing well and we are thrilled to have her home.
