Andy, How Long Has This Been Going On?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

When I arrive to see Kaley after work today, she was quite upset. After I calmed her down, she wanted to know “What should I do?” I gathered that she was quite confused about what was going on (i.e. where she was, why her body wouldn’t do the things she wanted it to do, etc). Eventually I was able to explain to her about her brain injury and the way things were and how they have been for the last couple of years. Her response, “How long has thins been going on?” My response “I miss you being at home.” Followed by “I miss being me.” I am quite excited that Kaley was with it enough today to understand her current situation, even if it is sad for everyone involved.

On another positive note, Kaley was able to teach me something this weekend. I was reading a Harry Potter book, and came across a word I wasn’t familiar with (guffaw). I pronounced it as best I could, and Kaley corrected me (sensing that I was struggling with the word). When I asked her what it meant, she correctly told me that it was a kind of laugh! Both of us were excited that she was able to teach something to someone else. We both recognized that it as been a long time since she’s been able to do that.
