Kaley’s Vision is Spotty

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Kaley’s cornea is healed up. She is still having trouble seeing, but it seems to come and go. Some days, the first thing she’ll tell you when you say hi to her is, “I can’t see”. Other days, like to day, we were laying in bed watching an episode of LOST, and she could see the TV clearly and even read large text on the screen. Have an appointment with her opthomologist who did the cataract surgery last fall for Thursday. Hopefully he’ll be able to give us some insight.

On a side note, Kaley was able to identify that we/I was watching LOST (she was supposed to be falling asleep). I don’t know if I told her what I was putting on or if she saw the word on the screen, but she was really with it in that regard.

Another side note, after giving her a shower today and blow drying her hair, I was reminded just how stunning Kaley’s beauty is.

I need sugar!

Kaley’s process of logic deduction seems to be working well. It seems that Kaley accidentally scratched the cornea on her good eye with her long fingernails recently. Given the symptoms of lack of vision (”I can’t see ANYTHING!”) and a cold sweat (presumably caused by the most recent urinary tract infection (UTI) and overall sluggish mental capacity make up a very nice list of symptoms for an insulin reaction (or so I’m told). In reality, Kaley’s doing well and recovering from a scratched cornea. In Kaley’s mind she is forever having low blood sugar and she is terrified (above her built in terror of not being able to see out of her good eye). In a few days, her cornea scratch should heal, we just have to get that far.

At least our situation only got a little worse this time

Kaley’s room got flooded last Friday night during that night’s storm. Her room is on the 2nd floor (which is the top floor of the building), but as part of their remodeling they are replacing the roof and the roofers didn’t seal up their work correctly before the monsoon hit. Luckily the nursing staff on hand were on top of things, and got Kaley out before the real water started coming in, so the immediate effect was minimal. However her room is no longer livable due to one wall falling apart and the mold/mildew smell. Kaley has been moved temporarily to another room, 163 (basically down a floor and across the hall). So now she’s sharing a room with another female resident. Obviously we’re not happy about that. I’ll find out what the plan is once the normal staff get in this morning. Since they were going to remodel all the rooms on her unit anyways, she’ll probably get the 1st remodeled room, which is nice. But it becomes a question of when can/will they start. Her stereo and cordless phone got fried during this, but I’m sure someone’s insurance will pay for their replacement.

We really didn’t need this!
